“Thingyan”, one of the largest and widely celebrated Myanmar Water Festival takes place every year in accordance with Burmese New Year which lasts for four to five days. It usually falls toward the end of the hot and dry season around mid-April. This is the time where people started to splash water on passersby using powerful water pipes and tones of water. Children using water pistols to drench with each other which they enjoy very much.

This year, Thingyan began on 13th of April 2017 (Thursday) and ended on 16th of April 2017 (Sunday). According to the Myanmar traditional calendar, it is part of the summer holiday at the end of school year. Apart from enjoying splashing water, the true meaning of this festival is that they believe the water can help them wash away bad things and sins while bringing luck and health in the New Year. Children will help wash the head for the elder to pay their respect.

Traditional dance, attire, songs and rituals can be seen during the festival. Tourists and visitors will be impressed by the beauty of Myanmar young ladies and their colorful traditional dresses. There is also a special flower that only blossom at Thingyan festical, called Pterocarpus macrocarpus which is also known as “Thingyan flower”.
